ABOUT THE ARTIST:
first steps: Anshul was born in India just outside of Mumbai (Bombay). He is half Sri Lankan and half Indian and had begun his childhood in Australia. It was during his years in Adelaide where his fascination for insects began. Curious about these beautiful and delicate beings he spent his time watching and studying them. When his family moved to Canada, he was only 5 years old and found himself living directly through a butterfly migratory path in Calgary. His mother made him a net and there began his collection.
Due to the humanitarian efforts his parents engaged in over the last 30 years, Anshul was able to travel to many third world countries accompanying them while they served the poor. So far he has been to 19 countries world over. That gave him the opportunity to collect and study butterflies and insects steadily. Today he boasts an impressive collection that rivals some of the finest museums around the world.
farming programs: Through the years he continued to visit India and Sri Lanka on a very regular basis. In both countries he witnessed first hand the depletion of butterfly populations. Helping to sustain them he set out to begin farming programs. After months of negotiations with the government of Sri Lanka he could start a sustainable development butterfly-breeding project. By the ninth month 30,000 butterflies were bred, of which not less than 3000 were released into the wild. Since the tremendous success of this project, Anshul also developed operations in India (Kerala) and Mexico (Puebla) and established relationships with pre-existing farms in Papua New Guinea, Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, Tanzania and the Republic of Central Africa.
